Trae Patton/NBCThursday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! featured Alicia Keys performing her song “Illusion of Bliss,” which can be heard on her latest album, Here.
The vocalist also sat down with Jimmy Kimmel to talk about the span of time between the release of her 2012 album, Girl on Fire, and her 2016 album, Here, which Alicia claimed was not an accurate time frame.
“I guess it’s been four years, but it’s not really four years,” she told Kimmel. “It’s not fair when you guys say four years, ’cause it’s not accurate, you know? Because you make an album, and then you start to promote it, and then that takes a year, and then you go on tour for like two years.”
“And then you come back and that was already three years, if you did your math. And then you come back and you’re like, ‘Oh man, I gotta make another, like make some more music.’ So then it takes, like, eight months to make a thing. And then boom it’s four years,” she added.
Alicia also thanked Jimmy for his appreciation of cocoa butter, both as a product, and as the subject of the interlude track of the same name that’s on Here.
“I like that you gravitated to my skit about cocoa butter, ’cause one of the things I did with the album is really create it — like..these interstitials, these descriptions of what was coming ahead with the song, so that that really gave a deeper meaning into what the songs are talking about,” she explained. “‘Cause this whole thing is a body of work, and that’s why I love this album so much.”
Keys will perform at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, airing Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
