Aretha Franklin biopic Respect starring Jennifer Hudson pushed back until Christmas Day

MGMWe’re going to have to wait a little bit longer to see Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin in the highly anticipated biopic Respect.

The film, which was set to open wide October 9, will now head to a Christmas Day release to qualify for awards season consideration. It will then expand in theaters on January 8, with a wide release on January 15.

Directed by acclaimed stage director Liesl TommyRespect follows Franklin’s rise to superstardom, from her childhood singing gospel in her father’s church to her emergence as one of the most powerful and influential voices in soul and R&B.

The cast includes Forest Whitaker as C.L. FranklinMarlon Wayans as Ted WhiteMary J. Blige as Dinah Washington, and Tituss Burgess as Rev. Dr. James Cleveland.
