Ashanti on participating in Disney’s Day of Giving: I was just so happy to be able to do something

by

ABC/Paula LoboAshanti was one of many celebrities to appear on ABC’s Good Morning America Thursday morning — as part of Disney’s Day of Giving, she took part in an on-air telethon to raise funds for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

The singer tells ABC Radio that prior to the event, she wasn’t sure of the best way to help out.

As she puts it, “I was just so happy to be able to do something.”

“When everything first happened, I was talking to my creative director and we were talking about what could we do to give and how can we give directly,” Ashanti tells ABC Radio.

“Just being on Instagram and watching the news and the videos and the clips it’s just heart-wrenching. And you feel so powerless when you’re home.”

While taking calls from viewers making pledges, Ashanti says she was personally inspired by those who called to donate.

“There was one lady, I think her name was Gloria and she was a social worker,” she recalls.

“She was retired and she wanted to reach out to her fellow social worker friends and go down to Houston and help out.”

“She donated and she lives with her children or grandchildren…she just had a big heart you know,” Ashanti continues.

“And she’s like, ‘I want to give more, I’m giving all that I can and I want to encourage people to give.'”

Besides lending an ear and her time at the Day of Giving telethon, Ashanti’s also planning to put on a charity event of her own.

“We came up with an idea to try and put on a concert,” she reveals.

“Obviously I would call some of my friends. So, we’re trying to work that out. I think it’d be awesome.”
