Image Courtesy Daniella Federicci/UniversalAshanti‘s breakout single, “Foolish,” lifted from her 2002 debut, self-titled studio album, almost featured a hip-hop heavyweight. The singer recently revealed Jay Z was initially supposed to record a verse.
In an interview with VladTV, Ashanti recalled that after Hov agreed to collaborate, Murder Inc. executive Irv Gotti reached out to Jay Z to appear on the project.
“Before the record was completed, that bridge wasn’t on there. He reached out to Jay to do a verse instead of that bridge,” Ashanti recalls. “[Irv Gotti] called him, he sent Jay [Z] the record and Jay was like, ‘I’m in.’ He said, ‘I wanna get on the record.'”
However, Ashanti says, Irv ultimately changed his mind. “He was like, ‘You know what? That’s typical. I’m not gonna do the typical R&B record and get the big rapper to co-sign it.’ He said, ‘I’m gonna make her write an ill verse,'” she says before singing the hook. “And that’s how that came about.”
