Ava DuVernay is sharing a follow-up about one of the real-life moments that happened in her Netflix series When They See Us.

In the series, Korey Wise, played by Jharrel Jerome, was seen going on an impromptu date with his then-girlfriend Lisa right before he decided to join his friends in Central Park. When he leaves his girlfriend, stating he’ll be back soon, the two never see each other in the series again.

DuVernay took to Twitter to offer an explanation to a fan who, like many, wondered if Wise was able to “reconnect [with her] after he was released.”

“I’m sorry,” DuVernay tweeted. “Korey never reconnected with his girlfriend from the time of his arrest. Sadly, she passed away before he was released from prison 13 years later.”

“Whenever Korey mentions Lisa to this day, he always adds ‘Rest in Peace.’” I truly hope she is. #WhenTheySeeUs.”

As previously reported, the limited series is based on the true story of five teenagers from Harlem who were wrongly convicted of brutally raping a woman while she was jogging in New York’s Central Park. It documents each teen beginning in spring 1989, when they were first questioned, to 2014, when they were exonerated.

Since its release, the series has nabbed a stunning 16 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series for DuVernay, as well as Outstanding Movie or Dramatic Special and Outstanding Limited Series.
