Beyonce Pays Tribute to Prince with “The Beautiful Ones” During Dallas Tour Stop

by

Robin HarperNow that some of the dust has settled over the Lemonade controversies, Beyonce performed a new tribute to Prince during her Dallas tour stop of her Formation World Tour.

Beyonce performed a stunning cover of “The Beautiful Ones,” which is a ballad from the late singer’s seminal Purple Rain soundtrack.  You can see two-and-a-half minutes of the performance in fan video posted to YouTube.

“‘Do you want her/ Or do you want me?/ ‘Cause I want you,’ Beyonce sang, a lyric that would have fit in her own album Lemonade,” Rolling Stone noted of the performance.

The 20-time Grammy Award winning superstar previously covered the song when she headlined the Glastonbury Festival in 2011.

During the inaugural April 27 tour date, Beyonce turned the stage purple and playing his original version of “Purple Rain.” She also reportedly remixed Vanity 6‘s “Nasty Girl” into her own song “Blow” as a tribute to the Prince protégé Vanity, who died in February.

Prince openly embraced Beyoncé when he first encountered her in 2004 rehearsing for their iconic joint  Grammy performance. The pair played a medley of Purple Rain songs as well as a “Crazy in Love” musical and dance interlude.

Mariah Carey recorded a version of “The Beautiful Ones” for her 1997 Butterfly.
