Beyoncé’s Newest Protege, INGRID, Talks Being Discovered By Beyoncé and Performing at this Year’s ESSENCE Festival

Leon Bennett/WireImageUp-and-coming artist INGRID has Beyoncé to thank for her rise in the current music industry landscape.

The Houston, Texas, rapper has completed some recent career firsts this summer —  her debut EP,Trill Feels, was released in June, and she introduced her R&B-meets-hip-hop sound at this year’sESSENCE Festival.

INGRID started her career’s journey as a songwriter. She says that her musical destiny was sealed growing in the same 3rd Ward, Houston, Texas neighborhood as Queen Bey and her family.

“Over the years, I was around them and kind of had a front-row seat to see the work that was put in, the things that they had to do to get to the point that they’re at now. I moved to New York on my own about six years ago and was kind of in the right place at the right time. She gave me the opportunity to write for her. I nailed it and the rest is kind of history.”

After moving to New York City on her own, INGRID was able to sharpen her creative instincts, teaming up with fellow artists such as Sevyn Streeter and Devin the Dude. In due time, INGRID was invited to perform at the 2016 ESSENCE Festival.

“It’s been amazing. Everybody at ESSENCE is so great and lovely, and it’s always been a dream of mine to perform. I came and see Frankie Beverly perform all the time, so it’s really cool to be here and be a part of it this year,” she says.

As for working with B herself? INGRID feels blessed to have Beyoncé as a manager and hopes to work with her on a forthcoming track or two.

“Luckily, having her around has opened some doors for me to get work…and maybe even her too one day.”
