Attention ‘B-Boys’ and ‘B-Girls,’ the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gave provisional approval to add BREAKDANCING to the Paris games in 2024. Evidently the IOC is trying to attract a younger audience.
There were rumblings that this could happen as far back as February, but the committee made it official today that breaking. Three other sports also approved were skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing, competitors will make their debut in those sports next year in Tokyo.
According to a tweet from Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal, what’s driving the new thinking are sports that needed to be, youth-oriented, small footprint (they don’t want the total no. of athletes to grow much, so team sports are v. hard), and they have to have broad appeal, interest across many countries.
Breakdancing originated among African American and Latin American youths in the South Bronx of New York City during the early 1970s. It has seen widespread popularity across many cultures.
