Sarah Morris/FilmMagicChadwick Boseman earned a posthumous Oscar nomination for Best Actor in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

The late actor is up against Riz Ahmed, who starred in Sound of MetalAnthony Hopkins, from The FatherGary Oldman in Mank, and The Mauritanian‘s Tahar Rahim.

Based on the award-winning play by August Wilson, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom marked Boseman’s final onscreen role before his death last August following a private, years-long battle with colon cancer.

In the George C. Wolfe-directed drama, set in Chicago in 1927, Boseman portrays Levee, a trumpeter with dreams of composing his own music and escaping the background of Ma Rainey’s band.

Viola Davis plays Ma Rainey and scored an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading role. The film also received nominations for makeup and hair styling, costume design and production design.

Boseman recently received a Critics Choice award for Best Actor for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. He also received a posthumous Golden Globe award for Best Performance by an Actor. His widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, delivered emotional acceptance speeches on his behalf at the awards shows.

Boseman is also nominated for four SAG awards for his performances in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Spike Lee‘s film Da 5 Bloods.
