Chance the Rapper may have gone off the rap radar for a bit, but he made a powerful return on Thursday with the drop of his new single, “Child of God.”

It’s the first solo project since his 2021 track, “The Heart and the Tongue,” but the Chicago rapper brought to it the same level of vulnerability and openness that he has on many tracks of the past.

Song lyrics include, “Truth be told, I got the ball on a string // Carried the weight of the world, but it came with some handles // I drag it to the basket, Moses with the passage // Safely Lord God, please make an example.”

In a thank-you post to Naïla Opiangah, the painter responsible for the single’s artwork, Chance said, “This song is about confidence, purpose and process. Thank you @bouenguidi for believing in me and working with me to create this very vulnerable piece, I am eternally grateful for and in awe of your gifts.”

Chance also solicited Opiangah to create an eleven-by-six-foot Child of God painting that’s available to view at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, according to Complex.

“Child of God” can be streamed via all the usual platforms.
