Childish Gambino performing “This Is America” on “SNL”; Will Heath/NBCChildish Gambino is breaking his own records.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the artist’s earth-shattering “This Is America” music video has earned over 50 million views on YouTube since its release Saturday night.
Those numbers dwarf those of any of his other videos released on the platform.
In addition, the visual for “This Is America” was the most-watched on YouTube from Sunday, May 6 to Tuesday, May 8.
The song itself has scored over 20 million U.S. streams and sold over 50,000 downloads since Saturday.
It’s also projected to debut within the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week starting May 13.
“This Is America” is Childish Gambino’s first release on RCA Records.
The video for the track makes a powerful statement about race, social justice, police brutality, politics and gun violence in the U.S.
Many celebrities such as Jaden Smith, Janelle Monae, Common and Empire‘s Taraji P. Henson have praised Childish for his socially conscious visual.
