Chris Brown‘s assault trial in Washington, D.C. is now scheduled to begin September 8, after the singer rejected a plea deal in the case that would have kept him out of jail.
Brown faces a misdemeanor assault charge over an incident last October in which he was accused of hitting a man. Brown’s bodyguard, Christopher Hollosy, who was also charged in the incident, was convicted of assault in April. Brown’s trial was originally set to begin that month, but has been delayed several times.
News of the rejected plea deal was made public in a hearing in a Washington, D.C. court on Wednesday. Under terms of the proposed deal, Brown would have been sentenced to time served, meaning he would have gotten no new jail time: he’s already spent around four months in jail in California as a result of the charge in Washington and its impact on his probation in California. But Brown’s attorney objected to some of the details of the facts Brown would have to admit to as part of the deal.
A deal still could be reached before September, however. At the hearing, Judge Patricia Wynn suggested she was hopeful that would be the case, and would be willing to reschedule the trial again if necessary. One snag holding things up: the question of whether or not Hollosy, who won’t be sentenced until November, would be forced to testify against Brown in the trial.
