Common reveals one of the hardest breakups he ever had was with Erykah Badu

by

ABC/Fred WatkinsCommon is opening up about about some the tough lessons he learned during his highly publicized relationships.

In an interview with People magazine, Common revealed he learned a lot about himself after splitting with neo-soul singer Erykah Badu, with whom he teamed on the hit singles “The Light” and “Love of My Life.”

“Some of the hardest work I’ve done on myself has been after breakups,” Common told the magazine. “With Erykah Badu, that was my first love where you’re just open and floating.”

The two famously starting dating in the early 2000s and officially called it quits in 2002.

“When we split, I was 27 or 28. I was in a haze, just going through the motions. It was hard to eat,” Common reveals.

However, looking back, the Oscar-winner says he doesn’t blame Badu for their break-up. “It wasn’t her fault, the relationship just didn’t go forward.”

Although Common didn’t name names, the actor-rapper also shared that one of his past break-ups sent him “to therapy.”  Thankfully, after many years of successful counseling, Common now says he’s ready for love.

“I’m open to a relationship now,” he says. “I know how to communicate like an adult now. I want to be the best partner I can be.”
