Courtney Kemp shares new details on the upcoming ‘Power’ spinoff ‘Power Book II: Ghost’

by

StarzPower executive producer Courtney A. Kemp is giving fans some rare details on the highly anticipated Power spinoff, Power Book II: Ghost.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kemp says the new crime drama — which is expected to launch sometime this summer — will feature Mary J. Blige as Monet, a “very successful woman in Queens who runs her business ‘with an iron fist.’”

“Power obviously is a masculine show but has very strong female characters,” Kemp said. “For Mary’s character, we use all the power and presence of the actress to communicate how this is a woman who is remarkable and unique in her abilities.”

“She’s as smart, savvy, and strategic as Ghost ever was, but her learning doesn’t come from books,” Kemp  continued. “We always said Ghost was a bookish kid who read all the time. This woman’s acumen comes from the streets.”

Kemp also revealed that while the spinoff will include “a bunch of new characters” like Method Man as an “ethically challenged lawyer,” and LaToya Tonodeo as Monet’s daughter, the series will also have characters from the original series.

“It will definitely have a lot of the same elements that you’re used to from Power in terms of criminality, sex, romance and the legal system,” she said. “Every scene is still about power.”

Power Book II: Ghost premieres later this year on Starz.
