Craig David remembers how massive TS5 DJ tour began as small house parties four, five years ago

by

ABC RadioBritish R&B artist Craig David is currently on the road for his TS5 DJ tour, which stops at the famed Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

The “I Know You” star tells ABC Radio that the concert series actually started off as intimate house parties at his Miami home, “maybe four, five years ago.”

He explains, “It was for like 10 of my friends…and… I noticed that people were messing around with the playlists. One minute it would be like some Biggie, like ‘Big Poppa,’ and then it would go to like, ‘Macarena,’ or some kind of crazy.”

After observing what was happening with the music selection at his Miami house parties, Craig says he “got a DJ controller, got a microphone and…started to include some of my songs.”

His idea then grew into a series of club shows in the U.K. and the U.S., and now he’s bringing them back in January for a select six dates. Craig says fans can expect “an experience” when coming to one of his TS5 performances.

“For example, ‘Walking Away,’ which I, if I was with my band, I’d do in its entirety with the band, with guitars. But in a club environment, that song would be a little bit slow, so I could take that song and maybe flip it over Dr. Dre‘s ‘Still Dre.’ “It’s being able to embellish tunes on the fly,” he adds.

“To see it grow in the same way where people feel it’s a house party, but it could be in front of how many thousand people… I think that’s the beauty of it, because I can mix some tunes, I’ll freestyle over another song, I’ll do a couple of my tunes.”
