Da Baby explains his controversial JoJo Siwa lyrics

After dropping his Beatbox “Freestyle” over the weekend, the rapper came under fire from Twitter users who took issue with some lyrics from the track which seemed to diss JoJo and call her the b-word. In the music video, he raps the line while holding up a picture of her on his phone.

As it turns out, though, Da Baby, born Jonathan Kirk, wasn’t calling the internet star out of her name, but claims he was simply making a play on words. According to Entertainment Tonight, he used “JoJo” in short for his own first name, Jonathan, and “Siwa” as an abbreviation of “See why.”

The “BOP” artist even sent a few tweets using the same play on words.

“I don’t ‘Siwa’ they so mad either bae,” he replied to one fan.

He also directed one tweet directly at JoJo explaining, “my 3 year old princess is your number 1 fan. I bought her every product you have out. She think she you. Don’t let em trick you into thinking id ever have a problem with you.”

“My word play just went over their heads,” he added. “All love on my end shawty, Keep shinning [sic]!”
