DC Comics Aims to Stop Rihanna from Trademarking Her Birth Name Robyn

by

ABC/Lou RoccoRihanna might not be able to use her birth name for an upcoming project, if DC Comics get their way.

Last June, Roraj Trade — the company holding the trademarks for Rih’s brands like her Reb’L Fleur fragrance — applied to register her legal first name, Robyn, for the purpose of “providing on-line non-downloadable general feature magazines.” Now, however, the comic book giant DC Comic has disputed the trademark request made by Rihanna’s company.

According to the law blog Pirated Thoughts, DC Comics claims the name is too similar to the name of Batman’s sidekick, Robin. After submitting a Notice of Opposition to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the publishing company argues the name conflicts and “consumers are likely to associate the goods and services provided by Rihanna under the ROBYN trademark with DC Comics’ ROBIN,” adding the “Robyn” trademark will dilute Robin’s distinctiveness.
