Erykah Badu to Donate Detroit Concert Proceeds to City’s Rape-Kit Backlog

by

Universal Music Group/Paige ParsonErykah Badu will donate proceeds from her August 12 Detroit concert to help clear the city’s backlog of rape kits, the Detroit Free Press reports.

More specifically, the funds will go to the ENOUGH SAID African-American 490 Challenge nonprofit organization, which was created to “bring justice to thousands sexual assault victims in Detroit.”  According to the organization’s official website, more than 11,000 unopened and untested rape kits were found in a Detroit Police Department unit in 2009, and each of these kits costs $490 to process.

Badu’s proceeds will go to this initiative to finally complete the tests, scrutinize the results and, hopefully, find the perpetrators, according to The Detroit Free Press.

The paper adds that $5 from each ticket sale will be donated, as well as the proceeds from a $100-per-ticket pre-concert reception and $1,000-per person VIP reception ticket sales.
