Exec. producer of TLC’s album says Kickstarter success is a tremendous validation

by

ABC RadioThe wait is almost over: TLC‘s fifth and final album, TLC, arrives on June 30.

And the group’s T-Boz and Chili of the legendary group can’t thank their loyal fans enough for helping them finance the project via Kickstarter.

Co-executive producer of TLCRon Fair, tells Billboard, “It’s only the music industry that creates walls that trap artists into these paradigms where you can’t do this or that.”

“The Kickstarter thing was a tremendous validation that none of that matters anymore.”

But T-Boz says that getting around to actually releasing the project was a whole other story.

“Child, dealing with writers and producers is like dealing with a whole room of kids,” she tells Billboard. “Once you finally figure it out, the singing part is cool.”

In true TLC fashion, the album will tackle social issues. For example, their new song, “Perfect Girls,” takes on the same topic the group’s hit “Unpretty” covered years ago.

“All the Instagram models, I’m like, ‘Wow, that girl doesn’t really look anything like that,'” says T-Boz.

“These little girls are chasing something they’ll never achieve.”

In addition to releasing the new album, T-Boz and Chili will be headlining the I Love The ’90s — The Party Continues Tour, kicking off July 7 in Everett, WA.
