Forest Whitaker joins Netflix’s ‘Havoc,’ Jamie Foxx to exec produce & star in Mike Tyson doc; & more

Paras Griffin/Getty ImagesForest Whitaker is joining forces with Tom Hardy for the forthcoming Netflix action thriller HavocDeadline has learned.

Written and directed by The Raid helmer Gareth Evans, the film follows a detective who works to rescue a politician’s estranged son, who’s stuck in the criminal underworld. As he does, the detective begins to unravel a “deep web of corruption and conspiracy that ensnares his entire city.”

This will be the latest project for Whitaker, who was last featured in Netflix’s Jingle Jangle. Up next, he’ll star as Aretha Franklin’s father C.L. in the biopic Respect, starring Jennifer Hudson as the Queen of Soul.

Meanwhile, Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx will star in and exec produce Tyson, a limited series about boxing great Mike Tyson that will be directed and co-exec produced by Antoine Fuqua. It will also be co-executive produced by Martin Scorsese and Mike Tyson himself.

Tyson was previously set up as a feature film back in 2014 with Foxx — who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the 2004 biopic Ray — attached to play Tyson and Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter writing the script. The project has now become a limited TV series and is expected to be shopped to the market for pickup at a studio.

In other news, Showtime has announced the return dates for The Chi and Black Monday.  The fourth season of The Chi is set to return on Sunday, May 23 at 9 p.m. ET. It will be followed by the third season return of Black Monday at 10 p.m. ET and the comedy series Flatbush Misdemeanors at 10:30 p.m. ET.
