Frederick Douglass Statue Vandalized

by

A statue of abolitionist Frederick Douglass was vandalized over the weekend in Rochester, NY. The monument stood in Maplewood Park, near the site where Douglass would help transport escaped slaves along the Underground Railroad.  On Sunday, it was ripped from its base and found about 50 feet away near the Genessee River. Police don’t know who vandalized the statue or if it was done in retaliation for the destruction of Confederate monuments across the U.S.  The statue was damaged and will be replaced with a new one. Do you think this was done in ‘retaliation’, or was it something else?  How do you feel about taking down statues of historical figures that could be seen as problematic today?
