Gabrielle Union shares Kaavia James’ birth photo with a touching message on Mother’s Day

by

ABC/Lorenzo BevilaquaOn Sunday, Gabrielle Union celebrated her first Mother’s Day by taking to Instagram to share the first moment she saw her daughter Kaavia James in the delivery room.

In her post, Union shared a photo of herself and husband Dwyane Wade looking on with joy and excitement as a doctor held up baby Kaavia to them after their surrogate gave birth to her. Union is seen with her hand over her mouth, while Wade hold ups his phone, taking a photo of their daughter.

“I’ve cried so many times today for so many reasons, mainly because I’d gotten accustomed to heartbreak and disappointment,” Union wrote, captioning the image. “I think a lot of us live in that space. I set up shop there. This moment reminded me that miracles do happen. You can’t age out of joy. You are worthy.”

She continued, “Sending so much love today to all the mamas, stepmamas, grandmas, aunties real and play, daddies, friends and anyone who has taken the time to nurture another living soul. I see you, I gotchu.”

“And to those who have lost their mamas, grandmas, mother figures, sending extra love and light and hugs your way.”

Union later posted a video with her and Kaavia, writing she was “still in shock” that her baby was actually here.

“I cant believe I haven’t snuck off to cry super ugly fat tears today like I have in the past. I’m just grateful and happy,” she captioned the video. “My sunshine.”

As previously reported, Union has been open about her fertility struggles and multiple miscarriages over the years. In her 2017 memoir, We’re Going to Need More Wine, Union wrote that her “body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant.”
