Nick Farrell/Sony MusicThe new edition of Beyonce‘s self-titled “visual” album, released last week, includes new video for “Haunted,” and now the singer is giving fans a behind-the-scenes look into the making of the cinematic video.
In a clip posted on YouTube, director Jonas Akerlund recalls that he wanted to challenge the singer’s comfort zone in creating the visuals for “Haunted” and “Superpower,” another song from her album.
“Part of my challenge is to take her places that she hasn’t been, to take her out of her comfort zone,” Akerlund explains. “These two videos are a little unique because they have less choreography than she usually does.”
Akerlund reveals that the singer also contributed to the creative process. “Beyonce had a few initial ideas that sparked all these different rooms and scenarios that we ended up doing,” he says of American Horror Story-inspired vignettes that appear in “Haunted.”
“We wanted to create something special,” he adds. “I think that she has only just begun.”
