In advance of the 2022 Grammy Awards this weekend, here’s a snapshot of some historic wins that could take place:
Kanye West already owns 22 Grammy Awards, and he’s nominated for five Grammys this year. If Kanye wins at least four of the five possible golden gramophones on Sunday, he will have a total 26, matching Jay Z‘s current standing as the most decorated hip hop artist. If he wins all five, he will surpass Hov. It’s unknown if Kanye will be in the building to accept any possible wins, since the Grammys banned him from performing earlier this month.
Self-proclaimed “Icy Girl” Saweetie is nominated for her first-ever Grammy. The “My Type” rapper is nominated for Best New Artist, as well as for Best Rap Song for her hit “Best Friend.” If she wins for Best Rap Song, she will have beaten the four men who are her fellow nominees: Nas, Kendrick, Ye and J. Cole.
Jon Batiste has the most nominations this year with a whopping 11, and they’re spread across different categories. With three previous nominations under his belt, it’s the most he’s ever been nominated for. If Batiste has the chance to surpass the legendary Michael Jackson for the most Grammys won in a year. Jackson won eight Grammys back in 1984.
Barack Obama — that’s right, the former President of the United States — could take home his third Grammy Award. He’s nominated for Best Spoken Word Album for his 2020 memoir, A Promised Land. He’s won the award twice before. If the former chief wins, he could tie former President Jimmy Carter, who currently holds the title with three Grammys in the same category.
Other nominees who could take home their first Grammy include Jazmine Sullivan, Tems and Giveon.
