Instagram recently announced the launch of a new enhanced tag feature that will ensure Black and underrepresented users get credit for their creations.
“As creators collaborate, inspire each other and drive culture forward on Instagram, proper crediting has never been more important,” the social media company said in the statement. “This is especially crucial for marginalized and underrepresented creators and collaborators whose contributions are often behind the scenes. Today, we’re launching enhanced tags on Instagram to make it easier for creators to receive credit for their work.”
The idea is the brainchild of Alexis Michelle Adjei and Cameryn Boyd, who are data analysts and engineers for Instagram. According to The Root, they created the feature to ensure that Black creators will make a living off the trends and content they create through social media.
Black creators have often been disregarded for content they’ve created. In 2019, 14-year-old Jalaiah Harmon created the viral “Renegade” TikTok dance, but credit for the dance routing was given to famous TikTok star Charli D’Amelio.
In an effort to bring awareness to the original creator, The New York Times published a spread to inform the world about the young star.
“I was happy when I saw my dance all over,” Harmon said. “But I wanted credit for it.”
Instagram added with regard to the new tag feature, “For many Black and underrepresented creators, crediting is an entryway to building a sustainable career as a creator, while combating cultural appropriation and ensuring the world knows who is driving culture.”
