According to OprahMag.com, Rae is set to adapt Tayari Jones‘ 2011 critically acclaimed novel Silver Sparrow for the screen. Jones confirmed to OprahMag that Rae has already optioned her book and will produce the adaption.
Set in Atlanta, GA, in the 1980s, Silver Sparrow follows Dana, an illegitimate child whose father is an covert bigamist. Dana, who ends up befriending her half-sister, struggles to keep her father’s secret, and to hide her desire to be acknowledged as his legitimate child.
“Issa Rae is an artist who has a real understanding and commitment to presenting the lives of young women with complexity, humor, and heart,” Jones told OprahMag. “I wrote Silver Sparrow as a tribute to my sisters. With Issa, this labor of love is in safe hands.”
This is not the first of Jones’ books to be adapted. Her latest novel, An American Marriage, was named an Oprah’s Book Club selection, with Oprah Winfrey confirming last year she was working on producing the film adaptation.
This is the latest project for Rae, who has multiple projects in development. Fresh from filming her latest film, The Photograph, with Lakeith Stanfield, Rae will star in the upcoming comedy The Lovebirds and then work on her two upcoming shows: Sweet Life, about an affluent black teen, and Him or Her, a half-hour comedy set to chronicle the dating life of a bisexual black man.
