Janelle Monae Says Kim Burrell’s Out of Ellen DeGeneres Show Performance

by

ABC/Fred WatkinsKim Burrell‘s previously-scheduled appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Thursday has been cut, according to Janelle Monae

Monae told TMZ that Burrell will not appear on Thursday’s show, while promoting her own appearance with Pharrell Williams on the same show.

“I don’t think she’s performing. She’s not. She’s not performing,” she told a TMZ cameraman. “I’ll be on there too. So make sure you guys tune in and watch and go see the movie January 6th.”

Janelle stars in the forthcoming film, Hidden Figures and Pharrell is the co-producer of the movie and the executive producer of its soundtrack. Kim’s voice is featured on one of the soundtrack’s songs, “I See a Victory.”

Speaking to TMZ about the anti-gay comments that Burrell recently made during a church sermon, Monae said,  “I’m a huge advocate for the other. I don’t stand for any hate speech, anything that targets our fellow brothers and sisters in a negative way.”  Kim’s speech, which went viral once posted on YouTube, features Burrell describing homosexuals as “perverted” and suggesting that all gay people will die this year.

Both Williams and Monae posted messages on their social media accounts after news broke of Burrell’s sermon, condemning the vocalist’s thoughts concerning the LGBTQ community.
