Myesha Evon GardnerJazmine Sullivan says she’s “nervous” about performing the national anthem at Super Bowl LV this Sunday.
Sullivan’s performance follows the 30th anniversary of Whitney Houston‘s legendary rendition of the “The Star-Spangled Banner” at 1991’s Super Bowl XXV in Tampa.
“I’m definitely nervous but mostly excited,” Sullivan tells ET online. “There’s a lot of pressure. Obviously no one can do a better version than Whitney but I’m just here to represent for my people…go up there, sing and bring some soul to it.”
For her performance, the R&B powerhouse will be joined by country singer Eric Church, with hopes they will vocally “blend the sounds of music and show some unity.”
Speaking about her latest album, Heaux Tales, Sullivan said she’s completely “overwhelmed” by the love and support she’s received for her eighth studio project, which topped several Billboard R&B charts.
“When I put it out everybody responded so well, it just filled me up with so much love and confidence to keep going,” she said. “I’m so glad it means so much to women, especially Black women.”
“It was important for me as a black woman to…tell my story and not feel shame attached to it,” Jazmine continued. “I wanted to do that for all women and Black women. I really wanted to give women their power back and let them know who they are is enough and walk in it.”
Sullivan said she’s even more excited about the “different avenues” Heaux Tales has opened for her, including a potential film helmed by Issa Rae.
“Were actually in talks now and working out schedules,” added Sullivan. “I think we’re going to do something amazing, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we get it together.”
