Following the news of the death of former South African president Nelson Mandela at the age of 95 on Thursday, celebrities are expressing their sadness.

Jennifer Hudson, who portrayed Mandela’s ex-wife in this year’s biopic, Winnie, said in a statement, “The Mandela family is in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Mr. Mandela fought for freedoms and equality that changed the face of South Africa and the world. We can all learn from his extraordinary journey.”

Tyrese, who is also morning the loss of his friend and actor, Paul Walker, expressed his condolences in a long message written on Instagram.

“We lost a man who literally dedicated his life on making a difference,” Tyrese wrote. “His heart will still beat for the world even in heaven…. Winnie and the family my deepest condolences to you I’m sending my energy and prayers to you and your family… Just know that while he was with us he SERVED his God given purpose and saved millions whole doing so.”

He also added a passage from one of his favorite speeches to pay tribute to Mandela. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It’s not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. -Marianne Williamson Author, Lecturer #RIH ( Rest In Heaven.)”
