Jerritt Clark/Getty ImagesWhen allegations of Bill Cosby’s sexual abuse surfaced last year, Jill Scott was quick to defend him, calling the allegations “insane,” and demanding, “Proof. Period.”
In light of Monday’s release of documents in which Cosby admitted to procuring drugs for use in having sex with women, the actress and singer has changed her tune. “About Bill Cosby. Sadly his own testimony offers PROOF of terrible deeds, which is ALL I have ever required to believe the accusations,” Jill tweeted Monday.
Scott maintained in her initial defense of Cosby — who presented her with an honorary doctorate in May of 2014 at their shared alma mater, Temple University — that she didn’t side with the entertainment icon, but declared, “I side with substantiated proof when media/society is attempting to destroy a magnificent Legacy.” She added, “Rape is a despicable, cowardly crime. If you’ve been raped- plz do NOT shower, go to police IMMEDIATELY, have a rape kit done. GET EVIDENCE.”
Monday’s revelation came in an unsealed 2005 court filing that was part of a civil case. Cosby, who’s been accused of sexual misconduct by dozens of women, said he obtained seven prescriptions for Quaaludes and answered “yes” when asked if he got them with the intent of giving them to women with whom he wanted to have sex.
“1) We live in America. Many African American men are detained &/or imprisoned for crimes without evidence. I will never jump on bandwagons,” Scott explained, continuing, “2) based on social media or hearsay. Proof will always matter more than public opinion. The sworn testimony is proof. Completely disgusted.”
“I stood by a man I respected and loved. I was wrong. It HURTS!!!,” Jill goes on. “When you get it ALL right, holla.” She then concludes, “I’m not sorry for standing by my mentor. I’m sorry the accusations Rtrue.”
