Johnny Gill has golf buddy Samuel L. Jackson to thank for new movie role

by

J Skillz EntertainmentJohnny Gill will appear in Spinning Gold, the upcoming biopic of famed music executive Neil Bogart, and he can thank his good friend, Samuel  L. Jackson for the role.

Bogart founded Casablanca Records and launched the career of stars like Donna Summer, Cameo, The Village People and George Clinton’s group, Parliament.  Jackson portrays Clinton in the film, and he recruited Johnny for the role of Clarence Burke Jr., lead singer of ’70s vocal group The Five Stairsteps.

The New Edition member tells ABC Audio that his role in Spinning Gold is special for him because Burke and The Five Stairsteps recorded one of his favorite songs, the 1970 classic, “O-o-h Child.”

“It was just me just portraying him, because he was one of the writers and producers of that song,” Gill says.  “Just about embodying him in the moment, in the scene where he was actually creating that song, so it was not hard to do all. Who don’t know that song?”

When Sam isn’t finding movie roles for Johnny, they enjoy golfing together — and while they play, they also enjoy some good-natured trash talk.

“Oh my God. Me and him fight,” Gill laughs ABC Audio. “We go at it and there’s nobody, nothing I look forward to in the mornings more than getting up and going to fight…That’s all we do. Fight, fight, fight, fight!”

Gill performed last week on the annual Soul Train Cruise. His next concert will be on Valentine’s Day, February 14, in Baton Rouge, LA, followed by a show the next day in Atlantic City, NJ.
