In the new trailer, which features appearances from Issa RaeLena WaitheAva DuVernayWill Packer, filmmaker Tim Story, plus Tyler Perry and Nia Long, to name a few, Barris gets some unexpected feedback about his ABC series, black-ish.

“I think we need to talk honestly if we want our art to progress,” Barris says during a video conference call with Story, Rae, Packer, DuVernay and Waithe.

“What do you think about my show, black-ish?” he asks. After a tense pause, Rae hesitantly replies, “Uh, it’s fine.”

Then Story chimes in, “black-ish seems to tap into the hearts and minds of 55-year-old white women,” which draws smirks and low gasps from the other creatives.

“Guess it wasn’t no Ride Along 2,” Barris snaps back, referring to the 2016 film sequel Story directed.

Formerly called Black Excellence, the new comedy series is inspired by Barris’ “irreverent, highly flawed, unbelievably honest approach to parenting, relationships, race, and culture.” It’s described as a “family sitcom,” but done in a unique way.

#blackAF launches on Netflix on April 17.
