Legal Battle Between Will.i.am and Pharrell Widens

by

Interscope RecordsA new front has opened in the trademark battle between Will.i.am and Pharrell Williams.

You may recall that the pair are battling over the use of the phrase “I AM” in their various brands.  The Black Eyed Peas frontman initially sought to keep Pharrell from using “I Am Other” claiming it infringed on his “I am Will” and other trademarks, sending Pharrell a cease-and-desist request.  Pharrell sued seeking a ruling from a court that his brand does not compete with Will’s.

Now TMZ.com says that Will has countersued claiming not only that Pharrell’s “I Am Other” will confuse consumers, but also that Pharrell has a history as an imitator.  As examples the suit cites the name of Pharrell’s record label — “Star Trak Entertainment” — and notes the ongoing dispute with Marvin Gaye‘s family over similarities between Gaye’ s “Got to Give It Up” and Robin Thicke‘s “Blurred Lines,” which Pharrell co-wrote and produced.
