Lena Waithe stayed true to her mission to highlight and share stories created by Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

On Wednesday, Waithe showcased her Rising Voices initiative, a partnership with Indeed and her Hillman Grad production company that focuses on investing in, uncovering and telling stories created by BIPOC filmmakers and storytellers. As part of the event, 10 films by 10 BIPOC filmmakers were premiered. Later that night, Waithe was also spotted at the official afterparty celebrating the participating filmmakers, including Johnson Cheng, David Fortune, Stacy Pascal Gaspard, Deondray & Quincy LeNear Gossfield, Kantú Lentz, Boma Iluma, Gabriela Ortega, Dre Ryan, Elisee Junior St. Preux and Shelly Yo.

Meanwhile, hip hop pioneer Fab 5 Freddy was just one of the many stars who showed up to support Blondie members Debbie Harry and Clem Burke at the premiere screening of Blondie: Vivir En La Habana. The new film documents the legendary rock band’s 2019 performance in Havana, Cuba. After the film, the audience received a full concert from Blondie, during which they performed some of their biggest hits, including “Rapture,” “Call Me,” “One Way or Another” and “The Tide Is High.”

Finally, Nayomi, A-Trak, Princess Nokia and Cookies Kawaii participated in the WarpSound Music Experience. As part of Tribeca Immersive, the event uses AI-powered virtual artists who perform alongside “three dynamic human artists for a first-of-its-kind, audience-interactive, live music showcase.” At the event, Nayomi, A-Trak, Princess Nokia and Cookies Kawaii performed with a “half-reptilian DJ” and a former DMC World Champion turntablist, DJ Dragoon. Tribeca’s WarpSound Music Experience was touted as the first-ever performance by AI-driven virtual artists producing and performing original, adaptive music live on stage.
