Madam C.J..Walker Netflix biopic Self Made to debut March 20 starring Octavia Spencer

NetflixiNetflix has announced the title and the premiere date for the Madam C.J. Walker biopic, starring Octavia Spencer.

Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker, the story of America’s first female self-made millionaire, will debut March 20.

As previously reported, Spencer will star in the title role as the trailblazing African-American hair care products entrepreneur. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove and who died in 1919 at age 51, amassed much of her fortune by developing and marketing a line of beauty and hair products for black women, via her Madame C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company.

Blair Underwood will portray Walker’s husband, C.J. Walker, and Tiffany Haddish will play her daughter, Lelia. The four-part series will also feature Carmen Ejogo as Walker’s business rival, Addie MunroeGarrett Morris as Walker’s father-in-law; Kevin Carroll as her longtime lawyer, Freeman Ransom; and Bill Bellamy as Ransom’s cousin, Sweetness.

Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker is based on the book On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker, written by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter, A’Lelia Bundles.

Kasi Lemmons, whose credits include Harriet and Eve’s Bayou, will direct. She’s also one of the film’s executive producers, along with Spencer and LeBron James
