Mariah on Prince’s Death: I Was Hoping that It Was a Trick

by

Jim Spellman/WireImagePrince died in April, but Mariah Carey, a fan and a friend of his, still can’t believe it.

Speaking to Complex, Mariah says, “[Prince] always had a plan. I just can’t believe he’s gone. I was hoping that it was a trick that he was pulling — that it didn’t really happen.”  Prince “was one of the best people I’ve met,” she says, adding, “He didn’t care about the big system.”

“I was always like, ‘At any time Prince could write a No. 1 song, because he’s that talented, but he chooses to do what he wants,’” she says. “I respect that. He actually helped me through a lot of situations.”

Mariah also discusses her divorce and upcoming marriage to Australian billionaire James Packer.

Of her failed marriage to Nick Cannon, the father of her twins, Mariah says, “I never thought I would have kids…but I never thought I would have babies with someone and then get divorced [either].”

Mariah says she and Packer have a “mutual understanding.”  “I don’t expect him to be at every little thing that I do, and vice versa. He’s got a lot of stuff on his plate and so do I,” she says.

Mariah says Packer’s always been “obsessed” with her music, but she didn’t mind. “Actually, if he didn’t like my music, then how would I be able to handle him being around when all I’m doing is creating?” she says.

But the marriage of two super-successful people is no simple affair. “We would like for it not to be a big thing, but the reality is it has to be,” she admits. “Because there’s things that are specifically mine, and he’s got huge friggin’ conglomerate stuff and I’m not looking to take that from him. So it has to be dealt with.”
