Mario loves his recurring role on Empire: They actually want the show to have good music

by

Chuck Hodes/FOXMario is the latest recording artist to land a multi-episode arc on Empire, and he’s loving his recurring role as a singer named Devon.

“They’re one of the shows that really take the music serious,” Mario tells ABC Radio. “They actually want the show to have good music, and to have artists on the show that actually sing and write music and produce, and all that.”

He continues. “[It] just makes it more authentic. And my character Devon, I like his story line. He lost his parents. He’s taking care of his sick sister and that’s all he cares about.”

Mario explains that his character Devon signed with Empire Entertainment after he ended a relationship.

“He broke up with his girl. They were on two different paths in life. He wanted to take his work and his music serious, and she just wanted to have fun and have sex,” he says.

“He was just like, ‘Look, I’d rather just focus on this,’ and he ends up meeting the Lyons, and y’all gotta watch the rest. It gets pretty crazy.”

Check out Mario in the fifth season of Empire, which airs Wednesday nights at 8 pm on Fox.

The “Let Me Love You” singer is adding to his acting resume, having previously appeared in the 2006 movie Step Up and the 2007 film Freedom Writers. He will also star with Tinashe in Rent: Live. airing January 27 on Fox.
