Mary J. Blige says she was very, very alone during final years of marriage to ex-husband

by

ABC/ Ida Mae AstuteMary J. Blige is a strong woman.

The “Real Love” singer tells Extra‘s Tracey Edmonds that although she was “going through hell” several years ago before her divorce from now ex-husband Kendu Isaacs, she learned how to survive that dark period in a significant way.

She explains, “My business was all over the TV. It was so much stuff going on and I was just very, very alone in that time. And I survived that time where people, there was just so much hatred everywhere, just coming after me and down on me. And I survived that time by learning how to love myself.”

Although it may be easy to conclude that Mary’s latest album, Strength of a Woman, is about her divorce, the superstar confirms it’s actually about the what she went through while trying to salvage their marriage.

Mary adds, “The title Strength of a Woman came from actually me understanding my strength as a woman, not from this divorce. The divorce came later. Which is when the divorce happened. But I was writing this album earlier from the perspective of a woman fighting really, really hard for her marriage.”
