ABC/Ida Mae AstuteDuring the latest episode of Chad Loves Michelle, Chad Johnson and Michelle Williams had a heated argument about race.
“I said something to him on the lines of ‘Well, Chad, because you are not black you would not understand why I communicate the way I do,” Michelle recalled to their therapist, Dr. Thema. “Maybe because you didn’t grow up around a lot of black people.’ So that was very, very offensive to Chad.”
According to the Destiny’s Child singer, Johnson tried to minimize her comments on their cultural differences by bringing up the fact that she has mental health issues.
“And this is not to justify it, but yesterday when we had the disagreement, he says, ‘Did you take your meds today?’” Michelle told the counselor.
Although Chad later apologized for his insensitive remark and admitted that he lost his temper, many fans were not to pleased.
“I am black and I am married to a black man and we do not yell and cuss each other out. Being black is not an excuse to be dysfunctional,” said one fan online.
Another couldn’t seem to understand why Chad was upset. “I don’t understand what was wrong with what she said to him. She can’t ignore race and become color blind, even if he tries too. It’s just apart of life.”
However, a few fans came to Chad’s defense. “I Agree with Chad it shouldn’t be a Black or White Thing,” wrote one person. “It should be a individual person thing on how you communicate. We need to not bring the Race Card in if we are Dating Different Nationality’s [sic].”
Chad Loves Michelle airs Saturday nights 9 p.m. ET on OWN.
