Sir Mix-a-Lot Mixes It Up with the Seattle Symphony

by

Def AmericanWe know what you’re thinking: “How can I call my weekend complete without beholding Sir Mix-a-Lot performing ‘Baby Got Back’ with a symphony orchestra?”

It happened Saturday night in the rapper’s hometown of Seattle, Washington. When the collaboration with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra was initially announced, back in April, the plan was to have Mix rap his hit “Posse on Broadway,” which is filled with shout-outs to Seattle streets and landmarks.  Thankfully, good sense prevailed, and the audience was instead treated to a full orchestral version of Sir Mix-a-Lot’s signature 1992 salute to the female derriere.

At the outset, Mix invited any interested ladies to join him on stage, promising “I don’t touch.”  After a quick selfie with the takers, the music began, and by the time the song was over, more than three dozen women were dancing on stage as the orchestra played and the audience rapped along.

The collaboration was proposed by London-based composer, producer and DJ Gabriel Prokofiev, who’s previously given orchestral treatments to songs from rockers Jimi Hendrix, Alice in Chains, and Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, and whose compositions include “Two Dances for String Trio, Bass Clarinet, Piano & Scratch DJ.”
