The crooner revealed that he was “surprised” about being honored with the Golden Note Award for his extraordinary career milestones.

“This is the first time I’ve received anything of this magnitude from ASCAP,” Ne-Yo said during an interview with Vibe. “It was definitely a surprise and not something that I was expecting at all. I’m especially happy, grateful and gracious about it.”

He adds with a laugh, “I honestly don’t feel like I deserve it just yet. I feel like I have a whole lot more work to do before I deserve something like this prestigious award, but I’ll damn sure take it.

The singer joins an elite list of songwriters, composers and artists given the honor, including Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Jay Z, Pharrell Williams and Alicia Keys.

In related news, fans can expect Ne-Yo’s upcoming album, Non-Fiction, to arrive on September 30.
