Netflix acquires seven classic Black sitcoms, including ‘Moesha,’ ‘Girlfriends’ and ‘Sister, Sister’

Courtesy of NetflixNetflix is continuing to bring important Black narratives to the forefront. On Wednesday, the streamer announced it had acquired the rights to seven classic Black sitcoms that will launch beginning next month.

“Time to pop bottles,” Netflix tweeted, before adding the official list of shows and launch dates.  The additions include Moesha, premiering on August 1; The Game seasons one through three, on August 15; Sister Sister on September 1; Girlfriends on September 11; The Parkers on October 1; Half & Half on Octover 15; and One on One also on October 15.

To help celebrate the news, Netflix tapped most of the stars from all seven shows to reminisce about some of their classic scenes.

“Surprising William in his new house,” Girlfriends star Tracee Ellis Ross recalled in the announcement video. “And I was dressed up as Spider-Man and I was hanging from his ceiling swinging.”

Fans also took a moment to rejoice online, quickly making #OkayNetflix a trending topic on Twitter.

“LETS GOOO!! I’m bout to binge Moesha!,” wrote one fan in excitement.

“OMG!!! I’ve died and gone to UPN heaven,” shared another, noting that most of the acquired sitcoms aired on the now defunct UPN network.

Yet another fan confessed, “This made me emotional. I’m so ready. Oh hell yes.”
