In the film, Mwine plays Walter, an Angolan immigrant who brings his wife and daughter to the U.S. after 17 years apart. Mwine tells ABC Audio that the film doesn’t just show the challenges of reuniting with family, it shows the true burden of love.

“What’s so great about the film is that it shows that it’s possible to be in love with two people at the same time,” he says. “And how hard it is to let go of that love. And how hard it is to rekindle a love. For me, it’s really a wonderful examination of love and [its] complexities.”

While love is one of the film’s general themes, Zainab Jah, who portrays Walter’s wife Ester, believes Farewell Amor goes deeper by bringing in authentic experiences from African culture that aren’t riddled with stereotypes.

“I think the thing that was most gratifying for me about this film, [was] to get the opportunity to do a project about an African family and to present it to the wide world,” Jah says. “And it’s not necessarily from a war torn, poverty porn, struggling back home [perspective,] but just saying we have a universality as people — as families.”

“We all want the same things,” she continues. “And that for me was the most gratifying thing. To be able to present us as a normal family trying to get back together and find each other.”

Farewell Amor, also staring Jayme Lawson, is now available On Demand.
