OWN announced on Thursday that its hit drama Queen Sugar has been renewed. The network also announced that season four showrunner Anthony Sparks will continue on as showrunner for the fifth; the first time that the series has kept a showrunner for a consecutive season.

“I’m thrilled to further explore the beauty, pain and triumph of this African-American family, with hopes that their story will continue to resonate with audiences who see themselves in the Bordelons,” said series creator Ava DuVernay.

“Every character feels like family. Our own,” Oprah Winfrey added. “I am excited to see what Ava has unfolding next for the Bordelons.”

Created by DuVernay and co-executive-produced by Winfrey, Queen Sugar chronicles the lives and loves of the estranged Bordelon siblings — played by Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner and Kofi Siriboe — in Saint Josephine, Louisiana.

During the fourth season, the series brought in an average of 1.6 million viewers every week, and was Wednesday night’s No. 1 original series among African-American women over both broadcast and cable.

Season 5 is expected to return to OWN sometime next fall.
