Pharrell Denies Ripping Off Marvin Gaye for Blurred Lines at Trial

by

Randy Holmes/ABCPharrell Williams took the stand Wednesday in the “Blurred Lines” trial in Los Angeles, saying he did not rip off Marvin Gaye‘s “Got to Give It Up” when he wrote the Robin Thicke hit.

The Voice coach said he captured the “feel” of Gaye, but it was not copyright infringement. He said, “I must’ve been channeling that feeling, that late-’70s feeling.”

When asked directly by his attorney, Howard King, “Did you copy ‘Got to Give It Up?’,” Pharrell replied, “No, sir.”  When King asked, “Did you do it subconsciously?”, the singer replied, “No, sir.”

Pharrell said of Gaye, “I respect his music beyond words.”

Pharrell, Robin and T.I. have been sued by Gaye’s children over “Blurred Lines,” which they claim ripped off their father’s song.

An accounting statement revealed in court this week showed that “Blurred Lines” generated more than $16.6 million in profits.
