Pharrell’s “Happy” Is Radio’s Most-Played Song So Far This Year

by

ABC/Adam TaylorIf it seems like you hear Pharrell Williams‘ feel-good anthem “Happy” every time you turn on the radio, well you might be right.  Halfway through 2014, “Happy” is not only the year’s biggest selling single to date, as previously reported, it’s also radio’s most played song of the year so far.

Billboard reports that the song leads Nielsen BDS’ mid-year report of the most-played songs on U.S. radio stations. Helping the song to its midyear lead is the fact that is seems to appeal to all kinds of audiences, topping the airplay charts for six different formats including Pop, Adult Contemporary and R&B.

John Legend‘s smash “All of Me” is the second most-played radio song of the year so far, followed by Katy Perry‘s “Dark Horse.”  Completing the top five are Lorde‘s “Team” and OneRepublic‘s “Counting Stars.”

So, will “Happy” finish the year as radio’s top song? Maybe, but it’s just as likely that some other song will come along in the second half of the year to top it. Billboard reports that last year’s first-half airplay leader wound up as the eighth-most played song for the year as whole in part because another record that featured Pharrell — Robin Thicke‘s “Blurred Lines” — dominated the second half of the year and finished number one.
