PJ Morton shares release date and track list for new album, ‘PAUL’

by

Morton Records PJ Morton is gearing up to release his first studio album in nearly two years.

Tuesday, the multi-talent announced he’ll be gifting fans with PAUL, on August 9, via his New Orleans-grown Morton Records. The effort follows his modern soul manifesto Gumbo, released in 2017, as well as last year’s Grammy-winning Gumbo Unplugged.

“Everybody calls me PJ, but I came into this world as Paul. That struck me as the perfect title for this album because Paul is the purest form of who I am,” Morton explained in a statement.

The 10-song album combines upbeat music with songs about the struggles of today’s society.  One song, provocatively titled “MAGA?,” was recorded with the help of CNN commentator Angela Rye.

Another song, “Buy Back the Black,” celebrates the legacy of Nipsey Hussle while delivering a message on the importance of giving back to one’s neighborhood, as the late rapper did.  The track “Don’t Let Go” is an anti-suicide song, while the voices of Morton’s own children are featured on the track “Kid Again.”

JoJoTobe NwigweRapsody, and Jazmine Sullivan are among the guest artists on the project.

Ahead of the LP’s arrival, fans have been treated to a taste of what’s to come with the fresh single “Ready.” In the accompanying clip, Morton sports retro workout gear as he flexes his musical abilities on the keytar.

Here’s the PAUL track list:
