The death of George Floyd has sparked protests and conversations about racism, police brutality, and more across the country over the past week.

In a statement on Twitter, Obama expressed his anguish regarding the normalization of systematic racism, while mentioning the death of Ahmaud Arbery and the Central Park mishap between Christian Cooper and Amy Cooper.

“This shouldn’t be ‘normal’ in 2020 America,” he wrote. “It can’t be ‘normal.’ If we want our children to grow up in a nation that lives up to its highest ideals, we can and must be better.”

Obama said ultimately the decision falls on everyone to, “create a ‘new normal’ in which the legacy of bigotry and unequal treatment no longer infects our institutions or our hearts.”

Lil Wayne seemed to be in agreement during an Instagram Live session with Fat Joe, where he put the blame on everyone.

“I think when we see these situations, I think we also have to understand that we have to get very specific,” he said. “We have to actually get into who that person is. And if we want to place the blame on anybody, it should be ourselves for not doing more than what we think we’re doing.”

Earlier today, Derek Chauvin, the white former Minneapolis police officer seen in a viral video kneeling on George Floyd’s neck, was charged with murder in Floyd’s death.
