Raheem DeVaughn says now is the time to love and embrace your blackness more than ever

by

The SoNo Recording GroupRaheem DeVaughn is encouraging listeners to embrace love with his latest album, What A Time To Be In Love.

The R&B statesman tells ABC Audio the message behind his eighth studio album isn’t strictly “confined to intimacy or matters of the heart.”

“This is a time to be able to love and embrace your blackness more than ever — for me, in particular,” says DeVaughn. “That’s a frequency I wanted to put out there: something that still celebrates black love life as it does relate to intimacy, [but] from a level of social consciousness and spirituality.”

“These were just the elements that I feel like were needed right now,” he continues. “I feel like love is the highest frequency to be operated on — no matter the state of the world.”

With all of the changes taking place in the world in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, DeVaughn hopes fans will remember that “the mind and spirit is still free. The heart is still free.”

What A Time To Be In Love features DeVaughn’s signature bedroom tracks, such as “Up For Air” and “Mr. Midnight,” plus spoken word from the “phenomenal” poet Raquel Ra Brown, and other tracks like “Marvin Used To Say,” which touches on social issues within the Black community.

“These are things that I wanted to tap into and…express through my artistry,” adds DeVaughn.

What A Time To Be In Love is available now — it’s the follow-up to 2019’s The Love Reunion.
