R&B & Hip-Hop World Reacts to Prince’s Death

Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesThe music community suffered a great loss Thursday. Iconic performer and artist Prince died at his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota, outside of Minneapolis. The world of hip-hop was quick to react.

Lionel Richie: “I can’t believe it, I’m in total shock. So many wonderful memories, I will miss him.”

The Weeknd: “i can’t believe what’s happening right now. i just woke up but it feels like I’m dreaming. we live in a world where Prince passes away???”

Mariah Carey: “Genius, legend, inspiration, friend. The world will miss you. I’ll never get over it.”

Patti Labelle released a statement saying, “I am deeply saddened by Prince’s untimely passing. Not only was he a dear friend to me, but an inspiration. His talent, artistry and influence and unparalleled and there will never be another like Prince! The world has suffered a great loss! May he rest in everlasting peace.

Mary J. Blige, posting a picture of herself hugging Prince on stage: “Wow!!! I can’t even believe this!!! I will never forget this day that you came on the iheart stage and blessed with this performance and I will never forget your many inspiring and helpful conservations. I love you. You will be sorely missed.  #RIPPRINCE”

Nile Rodgers: “RIP our dearly beloved #Prince. Tears and love on our tour bus….I’ll never forget my brother. We’ve had #good times.”

Lil Wayne: “R.I.P. to the God Prince. Gone too soon but here forever. Sippin Purple Rain 4 the legend. There will never be another”

Mack Maine: “They say the good die young…R.I.P. Prince….your contribution to the culture is much appreciated! #legend”

Royce da 5’9: “Wait… Prince?!”

Scarface: “And then Prince…….”

DJ Jazzy Jeff: “Think about this .Michael Jackson,Whitney Houston,Maurice White,David Bowie and Prince..Gone! Who could have imagined a world without them!”

Joey Badass: “RIP to a real legend, PRINCE. Definitely one of my favorites of all time… Tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999.”

Jean Grae: “It’s not when people say ‘oh, that guy is the best.’ That’s an opinion. Prince was actually the best. That’s a fact.”

Ice T: “Im sooooo very sad right now… PRINCE can’t die.”

Eric B and Rakim: “Rest in Peace Prince”

Many artists also took the time to pay tribute to Prince by posting photos of the singer on their Instagram. Ja Rule, Juicy J, Fat Joe and Swizz Beats were just some of the rappers who wrote intimate stories about how the legendary performer influenced their art.

Prince’s publicist, Yvette Noel-Shure, confirmed his death in a statement provided to ABC News. 

“It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary iconic performer, Prince, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning at the age of 57,” the statement reads.  “There are no further details as to the cause of his death at this time.”
